Complete Masonary Construction Fireplace Typically this type of fireplace was constructed when the home was constructed. The materials used are completely masonary, including the hearth and chimney. The chimney flute or flue pipe is usually square or rectangular tile type, red or tan glazed ceramic. The damper closure system is usually originally a wide plate opened with an armiture. A masonary fireplace could have been built with an “Ash Dump” a small door on the floor of the fireplace. There is no standard size or style of a Masonary Fireplace. |

Prefabricated Fireplace Prefabricated Fireplaces are constructed in a factory. Steel construction and air cooled chimney system. The construction is a series of shells of steel with air cooling sections to keep the outside casing cool. This type of fireplace came into popularity in the early 70’s because of the low cost installation. Wood framing is typically used with a masonary face so it mimics a masonary fireplace. The interior walls are usually refractory panels cast to look like a brick pattern. The Chimney is an air cooled 2 or 3 wall with an 8 or 10” stainless interior pipe. This chimney should only be cleaned with a plastic brush not a steel brush as it can damage the stainless interior pipe. Prefab Fireplaces are designed for moderate fires, as large fires can permanently damage it’s structure. They are designed for decorative purposes, as they really don’t have any efficiency capability because of their air cooling systems. Door systems for the prefab must be made specifically made for the brand and model of fireplace. |
